Yacht Racing

The 2023 season saw the introduction of 2 Fleets Fast (A) and Slow (B), albeit with one startline. We were able to set different courses which seemed to be a success and encouraged several new yachts to take part in racing, some for the first time.

For 2024, we will continue to use the new RYA YTC rating (base) numbers but will monitor performance throughout each series and the Club Handicap Committee will seek to adjust and apply individual ‘TRSC Club Handicap numbers’ at the start of that series. These will be known as Club YTC Numbers but now that the PPSA has formally adopted the RYA YTC rating system, all Club Regattas and Port Races will use the base YTC Numbers in order that visiting yachts can be on a similar format.

If you have not yet applied and obtained your new 2024 YTC number, you will need to apply on the RYA website – www. swytc.org.uk

If you are interested in joining in, even for the occasional race there are always members who are pleased to offer advice and guidance. You join in the fun of the racing season at any point in the year, but you must complete the TRSC registration form, available at the club and online. The 2024 sailing Calendar, including Notices of Race and Sailing Instructions, Entry Forms and Race Marks are also available as ‘downloads’.
The season begins after the second lift with a 7 race series and our annual Yacht Regatta will be held in June 2024. As well as providing lots of fun racing the Regatta normally has a full social programme off the water with food, music and socialising aplenty. We open with a Novice Helm race on Friday evening and plan to run at least 5 races over the weekend for both racing and white sail fleets (those without Spinnakers or Asymmetrics), if there are enough entrants.

2024 Yacht Racing Schedule
Monday night racing commences in April for a series of 7 races with the Spring Series incorporating several Cup races. The Early Summer Series starts in June and runs until the Late Summer Series starts in July. The Saturday Series starts in September to mid October, excluding one Saturday in September to accommodate the Cargreen Sailing Club annual Regatta, which will commence in the Sound and finish at Cargreen, followed by a BBQ.

Cup Races

TREVOR PARROTT TROPHY – race to Salcombe
COMMODORE’s SHIELD – 2 handed Long Distance race
DEREK MAKE CUP – Long Distance Race around the Breakwater
We will continue to run all of the traditional cup races throughout the racing series…

Dinghy Racing

In recent years the racing fleet has been going from strength to strength with numbers approaching 20 boats on many Wednesday evenings. With a slightly new format for dinghy racing, starting with a 7 race Spring Series and Summer. Details are also listed in the schedule of training events and the Club Notice Board.

The annual Dinghy Regatta will be held on the weekend of 27/28th July 2023 with entries expected from a number of other local clubs. If you are interested in joining in , if only for the occasional race, we are always pleased to provide advice and guidance. Most importantly, the Cadets will continue to meet on Friday evenings and will hopefully be providing the crews and champions of the future.

Crewing

If you are interested in crewing either on a dinghy or a yacht, please put your name forward, either on the Club Notice Board or on the various TRSC What’s App Groups :

TRSC Yacht Racing

TRSC Dinghy Racing

TRSC Cruising

TRSC Duty Rota

We have decided to trial a more inclusive system for the 2023 season where racers are asked to help undertake a session in the race office, either as P.R O (Principal Race Officer) or A.R.O (Assistant Race Officer). A list has been published of names and dates and will be available on this website and the Club Notice Board together with the Club What’s App Groups. Please note that if you cannot make a Duty for any reason that you swap with someone of similar experience.

Volunteering

There are many opportunities to get involved by participating in Club activities and also by becoming a volunteer. Volunteers are an essential part of the Club. If you feel that you would like to assist on any of the following, then please use the ‘contact us’ above.

  1. Helping out operating the safety boats for dinghy racing and associated events.
  1. For yacht Racing events, assisting taking competitors out to their yachts.
  1. Race Officer duties – see above.
  1. Catering – we are most keen to get help on both Monday and Wednesday evenings to support the Yacht and Dinghy racing crews after Racing.
